Lost in the ocean of cards already? Sad to say, you are just seeing the tip of the ice berg. No worries, hang in there, I will ‘fish` you up in a moment. So, why are these cards blooming like nobody`s business in today`s card industry?
According to the National Retail Federation, after 3 years` of studies, prepaid debit cards have shown a steady rise in their popularity. Reason being, no credit checks are needed. Meaning, if you have a bad credit history or even if you are bankrupt, you can still apply for a prepaid debit card! You are spending your very own cash after all.
Prepaid Visa and Mastercards are not attached to any banking accounts. Thus, even if they are stolen, you do not have to worry your social security code or other personal information being abused. They are also much safer compared to carrying a huge amount of cash around and being robbed. In the incident where the cards are stolen, you are protected from unauthorized transactions such as Visa`s Zero Liability Policy.
Just like everything else, besides pros, there are cons for these prepaid Visa and Mastercards, alike the Eastern Taoism philosophy of Ying and Yang. For some cards, you loose your expired balances. Imagine you have $1000 in your card balance and you loose them all! This really sucks! Most prepaid Visa and Mastercards emphasize on their ‘free direct deposit` feature. However, it might not be as free as you think. For some cards, this might only apply to pre-designated paychecks. All other deposits, withdrawals and transactions such as signature transactions and Pin transactions may bare a certain amount of charges. By the end of the day, I do not think it is that ‘free` after all.
Besides these, please bare in mind not all prepaid Visa and Mastercards are reloadable. The non-reloadable prepaid cards are also known as gift cards. Once the fund is depleted, it is merely a piece of useless plastic. You cannot withdraw any money from any ATMs with these cards as well. Non-reloadable prepaid Visa and Mastercards can be easily obtained at many supermarkets, grocery stalls etc. Thus, do not be too happy coming across a card reading prepaid Visa or prepaid Mastercards at a grocery stall near you.
